New construction of the EbiMIK LOS 01 Oberglatt building material mixing and demolition processing plant for sustainable ‘urban mining’ with a closed cycle. State-of-the-art crushing and screening plants with a sophisticated robotic sorting line form the first stage of a highly modern building material recycling plant.

Project
Frei Fördertechnik AG from Rubigen was responsible for the planning, realisation, installation and commissioning of the construction waste processing plant as a complete turnkey system. With the construction of the modern processing centre, mixed demolition waste is processed into high-quality products and recycling is ensured in accordance with the law. This sets new standards in the recycling industry.
The feed capacity of the conveyor system is 200 tonnes per hour. During dismantling, concrete and mixed demolition waste are separated on the construction site and transported to Rümlang (Ebirec) or Oberglatt (EbiMIK). The weight is then recorded at the receiving terminal. The sorting hall at EbiMIK is equipped with a sorting excavator weighing almost 100 tonnes. This carries out an initial rough pre-sorting of the impurities. The material is fed into the sophisticated transport system by the sorting excavator. This transports the material to the two-roller crusher (sizer) for optimum shredding for the subsequent robot sorting line. Material up to 1,200 millimetres in size enters the two-roller crusher and is crushed gently. The discharge grain does not exceed 400 millimetres. The material stream is brought together and separated from metal parts using overband magnets. The recovered metal is collected centrally for recycling.
On two robot lines, each with three gripper arms, unwanted materials are separated from mineral materials. The robots sort the construction waste into various new secondary products. The robot separates mineral materials from foreign materials such as plastic, plaster, wood, light metal, etc. The robots' artificial intelligence uses four sensor boxes to identify the materials. The robots are internationally networked and learn from each other. A buffer silo was designed in advance to enable the robots to operate for up to 24 hours a day and remain flexible.
The robots can sort out heavy pieces weighing up to 30 kilograms, which are not permitted for humans according to Suva and are therefore not feasible. Humans would actually be better at sorting, but unfortunately only in the short term, as the robot guarantees consistent performance and reliable quality 24 hours a day with up to 12,000 picks per hour.
The recyclable materials are collected in drop boxes or transported to the raw materials warehouse on robust conveyor belts. After the sorting line, the mixed waste is crushed to 0–32 millimetres and transported to a storage hall. The raw materials warehouse can store up to 60,000 tonnes of secondary raw materials.
The distribution conveyors deposit the material layer by layer in the raw material warehouse. This creates a raw material that is as homogeneous as possible. The control system is capable of running various storage strategies. Further processing takes place in the downstream component production. Direct loading onto trucks or trains is carried out via an efficient dosing system with a loading capacity of 800 tonnes per hour.
